The ability to take someone else’s perspective

Communication will be the answer to any problem you find in your life… Well, I’m not sure it is all that easy, but it will certainly get you a long way.

One of the great things about being a Statkraft trainee is not only that we get to work in several departments and locations. It is also that we are trained on specific skills and competences during the two-year trainee period. This December, the training involved persuasive communication and cross-cultural understanding.

A core point in communication is to adjust yourself and your message to your audience. Linh and Roberta were certainly captured by Richard Stephenson’s lecture

After several days with workshops on communication and cultural understanding, I am certain that being a good communicator will be an important step towards success. Not least, since Statkraft is based in more than 20 countries, it is obvious that we trainees need to be aware of the cultural challenges that may arise due to misunderstandings and judgment. What’s not a better way than to start with oneself? Only in our trainee group, we are from four different nationalities, from three different continents.

Trainee colleague Sneha is from India and will continue working in the New Dehli office after one year at the Statkraft headquarters. Here, she blends in naturally with the Norwegian Christmas decorations.

Our culture and nationality affects the way we feel, think and behave. We should therefore always strive to look for the positive intention in others’ behaviour – especially when they are from a culture that is different than ours.

Statkraft is one of the main sponsors of the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, so the opera house was a natural place to host our workshops. Of course we had to explore the corridors in the foyer area

Strike a pose! During our days in the opera, we were invited to watch the dancers of the Norwegian National Ballet doing their daily practice. Trainees Lotte and Arvid were quite inspired by what we had just observed..

...and so were the rest of us, too. Merry Christmas from the Statkraft trainees of 2015!
